Water Recovery in Princeton Township

Story and Photos by: Gary Szabo

Princeton Township(MERCER)--Divers from the Trenton Fire Department have been called into service for the fifth time in the past ten days. On Saturday evening (12/13), the dive team was called to Alexander Rd. in nearby Princeton Township to recover a vehicle in the Delaware-Raritan Canal.

Police reported that a woman in her early thirties was parked in an area adjacent to the canal when she apparently lost control of her car and crashed through a fence entering the water. The car began to drift downstream with the driver unable to escape.  Witnesses to the incident were able to rescue the woman from the sinking vehicle.

The car drifted nearly 250 feet downstream coming to rest under the Alexander Rd. Bridge. The vehicles head lamps were still on making it easy to locate for divers.  A heavy duty wrecker was brought in to assist in the recovery which took just over an hour to complete.

Trenton Units on scene were Rescue Co. 1, Marine 1, and Ladder 1 with assistance from the Princeton Fire Department’s Special Services Unit.
