Mulch fire causes stir in Ewing

EWING -- A fire inside a large pile of mulch that began Wednesday morning brought out several area fire companies to douse the smoking mass with water from ground and aerial hoses.

The blaze, which began around 11:30 a.m., was in the pile at Mercer Wrecking and Recycling Corp., located on Calhoun Street just across the border from Trenton. A worker at the scene said the mulch had been sitting in its current position six months.

Firefighters from Ewing, Lawrence, and Hopewell were on scene battling the fire, of which no flames were visible but a large column of white smoke easily seen from the Pennington Avenue intersection on up Calhoun.
